Polar greetings!

After almost three years of Covid-19-induced absence St Andrews students and staff will return to Antarctica for learning, observing, immersing and experiencing Terra Australis Incognita up close and personal. We can’t find enough words to describe the excitement, anticipation and little bit of anxiousness about the enormity of the journey. The overall trip format is tried and tested in our previous expeditions yet the details for our 2023 adventure are different and new reflecting the changed circumstances in a post-pandemic, climate changing world.

For starters, there will be two student groups on two different ships, supported by a new expedition company (Hurtigruten Expeditions), and at a different time of the Antarctic season (January). We will once again watch for marine mammals (whales, dolphins and seals) and seabirds but also hope to observe penguins at their colonies and collect microplastics at selected sites.

Watch this space to follow us on our austral adventures across the Southern Ocean and to the Western Antarctic Peninsula.
