Day 1 – 02 January 2023

The first day of our journey saw us, 14 students and two staff from the University of St. Andrews, come from all over the world, from the UK, the US and even close by Sao Paulo, to Buenos Aires. We were kept company by gorgeous views from the planes as we made our way into Argentina which would also mark the first time on the South American continent for a number of us. Some of the group had arrived a little earlier to take in the buzz of Buenos Aires city in their own time, others only landed on the morning of reunion day. The second of January saw us reunite  at the Hilton in the trendy district of Puerto Madero. Here we also met with Hurtigruten staff and fellow travellers, got the required antigen covid tests and were briefed on the activities of the next day which would include us hopping on a charter flight to Ushuaia. Apart from a couple of mishaps, including a booked shuttle being cancelled right upon our landing and delayed baggage we safely reached the hotel with no issues.

Energy levels and exhaustion determined the afternoon’s activities. Some went off to explore the city while others roamed more locally. We had lunch in the sun among artwork and cranes of Puert Madero. Those who took to the streets for a sightseeing tour visited the Palermo neighbourhood. A particular highlight was the famous bookshop El Ateno Grand Splendid, an old theater now converted into a massive library, boasting beautiful paintings on the ceiling as well as an enormous collection of books. Some explored the local Madero neighborhood including the nearby wetland reserve or indulged in some shopping (especially those with the lost luggage). There was also opportunity to make use of the hotel facilities including a quick swim in the pool.

Most of us took full advantage of the comfi beds to get some much needed sleep in preparation for a 2.30 am start the next morning to catch our charter flight to Ushuaia. As we turned in for the short night we were already looking forward to the next leg of our long journey South.
