We’re getting ready for Antarctica 2024!

In early January, 17 super excited first time student explorers and 2 seasoned staff will be heading to Argentina and on to Antarctica for our 10th University of St Andrews student expedition. We will once again post updates of our southern adventures on this blog. For better (or worse!) we can remain connected with the world even when in Antarctica – but rest assured that being present in the moment and living the experience will be more important than blogging about it. Past expedition diaries provide a great archive of our many activities and fun memories so we’ll aspire to follow this tradition of record keeping as we venture further south than on most previous trips.

Climate change and unusual weather events have loomed large globally during 2023 and will no doubt be an important element in our upcoming documentation of our journey to Antarctica. In addition, after the plague (pandemic, Covid 19) now comes pestilence (avian influenza also called bird flu) that will pose some additional challenges for coastal exploration. We’re all ready for enhanced biosecurity measures and changes to our data collection protocols (and everyone has fingers firmly crossed that the worst will not come to pass).  You can read more about bird flu in Antarctica and the associated concerns for wildlife in this article, and see here for what IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators) is doing to keep visitors and wildlife safe.

Let’s see what this Antarctic expedition will bring….
